L-Box SCC/SKB/AUV

For testing the spread and flow properties of SCC, SKB and AUV concrete.

The L-box is a testing tool used to assess the flow and passing ability of fresh concrete.

Testing of:
SCC, SKB – self-compacting concrete
AUV – underwater concrete

NS EN 12350-9 – V-funnel method

NS EN 12350-12 – J-Ring method

Ø300 mm, with 16 adjustable bars Ø18 mm
Ø300 mm, with 16 fixed bars Ø18 mm

Research: It is also useful in the development of new concrete mixes and techniques. The L-box is an important tool for engineers and researchers working with concrete, as it provides valuable information about the material’s properties.

Procedure:

Concrete is placed in the high section of the box without compaction. The gate must remain closed.
The low section of the box is then filled with water.
Five minutes after concrete filling of the box has started, the gate between the high and low sections of the box is opened.

  • Time is measured from the moment the gate is opened.
  • The time until the concrete reaches the end of the box is recorded.
  • When all movement has stopped, the concrete height at the end of the box is recorded.

This height increases slowly over time, so it is important to ensure that the height has stabilized at the time of recording.

Standards:

EN 12350-10 – Testing of fresh concrete, L-box method
Publication No. 9 – Self-compacting concrete

Other methods for measuring SCC (SKB):

NS EN 12350-8 – Slump flow – Flow table
900 × 900 mm rigid plate with pre-marked rings for measuring spread

Measurement of spread:

The L-box is used to measure how well the concrete spreads during casting, which is important for assessing its workability.

Standardization:

It is designed in accordance with the standard EN 12350-10, which specifies methods for testing flowing concrete.

The L-box has a shape resembling the letter “L”, with a length of approximately 71.2 cm, a width of 28 cm, and a height of 68.2 cm. It weighs around 40 kg. It includes a gate for releasing the concrete and bars to control the outflow of the material.

Quality control:

The L-box is used in laboratories to ensure that concrete mixes meet specifications for flow and workability.
